I just purchased the game and overall I am quite impressed. I was an addict to the original Amiga game and this version captures most of the depth and quality of the original. I do have one question though. Is there any way to create your own players or edit ratings? That was one of my favorite aspects of the original game. If you didn’t agree with the original ratings you could change them. Also, it was lots of fun to put yourself in the game. I’m hoping these features will be added soon. Thanks for a great game!

    • Eddie D.

In the not-too-distant-future, I hope to add all the GM/commissioner functions.. though some of them may move to the web as I cannot see editing stats on the iPhone as a very pleasant experience… moving to the web for GM/commissioner stuff will put us one step closer to user-to-user play over the Internet!

      Thanks for your comments!

      • newmanm

Great to hear that you will be adding full GM/commissioner functions. I agree it would be easier to do on the web than on the iPhone. I did notice one small issue. At the end of the game when you look at the batting stats there is a column right after the SB column. I’m not sure what the column is because it is cut off by the edge of the screen – maybe CS? I have a 2nd generation iPod touch so I don’t know if this problem also exists on the iPhone. Not a big deal, but I thought I’d mention it. Keep up the great work!

        • Eddie D.

yes, I haven’t been able to solve Apples “UI” implementation for scrolling in two directions… So, in the 1.0.2 release (coming soon, when apple releases it), I’ve implemented a different strategy.. check out the REPORTS in the commissioner after you update your App. It uses the web browser technology and has all the gestural inputs (swiping, zooming, etc.) that let you look at a HUGE amount of data.

    Hi Eddie –

Just stumbled upon this release as there is a thread about it over on the Touch Arcade forums: http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=7763

While I think the price point is going to deter folks who don’t remember the original, I couldn’t be more excited for the release and future updates. My only bug report so far is the graphical glitch on the settings screen (horizontal lines between “Stats Only” and “Fast Animation” Also, the Help and Feedback screens take a long time to load up, thought there was a bug at first….

Really looking forward to support for additional seasons.

    Thanks, Al
    http://www.padresfanmods.net

    • Eddie D.

Thank you… that double line is purposeful and I’ll probably re-arrange the settings to move the speed into a slider.

The Help and Feedback go out to the web so I don’t have to update that stuff in the phone… I’ll see if I can add a waiting visual while it’s loading up.

We’ll see how the price point goes.. it’s not a casually built application but a full-out piece of software (as you know)… so, we shall see!

  • oldsos

In the manage mode, when you go to check on pitcher all it does is do you want to change pitcher and then it freezes.

Also it will not let you move a pitcher to the bullpen.

  • hugerhino

Just bought the game but in trying to load it on my iPod Touch it gives me a message that it is not compatible with this ipod yet it says on iTunes that it is. Are you going to send out a fix for this soon? I’d like to think that I didn’t waste the 8 bucks on a defective game. I also would like to not have to put a negative feedback to iTunes about the EWB product.

  • bryan_05

I am completely new to EWB. I have played OOTP, Baseball Mogul, and countless other baseball games, but EWB has me very confused as to what is actually going on. Is there an instruction manual somewhere?

This was my first app purchase for iPhone and am disappointed at the moment.

  • statnut

I just posted a review of EWB here: http://www.battlereports.tv/?p=823

I think there are some positives to the game, but there are aspects that need work.

    • Eddie D.

Thanks for your notes and your review… most, if not all, the things you point out are in the code-base of the product and will come to feature-fruition in time… some in a matter of weeks (depending on approval cycles). Suggestions on the lineup screen are welcome.. as it is, I’ve had to eliminate some of the lineup features to make it work in this screen resolution… I will look into maintaining the mode-ness when you select lineup from the play-calling screen (in the mean time, you can simply click CALL PLAY and it will switch you to that view.

      Stay tuned!

    • Eddie D.

Look for the new release.. should start to unlock many of the features you discuss that live in the code-base. This is primarily a one-person labor of love effort, so some of these features will take time to get from the code into a user interface.. be patient and, what helps the most, are priorities for what REALLY needs to be done next!

  • gdm049

I have an ipod touch 1st generation and when I purchased the game it said that it is not compatible with my device. R u going to make an update so 1st generation itouch owners can play the game as well?

    • Eddie D.

I’m looking into it.. I have to figure out WHAT makes it compatible (I believe it’s the audio system)… so, I’m going to see if I can wrangle a tester or two to help me debug this.. interested?

  • westwardyank

I mistakenly purchased the app without checking the compatibility (stupid I know), will this app be made compatible with the new 3G?

  • oldsos

    Eddie:
If you use Chavez Ravine as your ballpark, there is an outfield wall in the middle of the outfield. It does it for all 3 leagues.

Also, if you change a pitcher in the middle of an inning, the original pitchers name remains for the next batter.

    • Eddie D.

It’s been reported that a few ballfields have this rendering error… I’ll be looking into that!

I’ll look into the issue with the pitcher’s name change.

      Thanks.

  • dmarzo

    Hi Eddie

I am another Ipod touch First Gen person who cant use this version. I would be more than happy to help debug if you need anyone. I am absolutely ecstatic that this app is available – thanks so much for working it!

Purchased the game yesterday. I think it has a lot of potential. Here are two questions:

    * Is there any way to save a game in progress and come back to it later?

    * At one point, when a player was stealing a base, white frames appeared around the field for a moment or two

    Alan

  • Eddie D.

Saving your current game-in-progress is on the short list for inclusion.. when implemented, it will be (probably) listed in the commissioner’s menu to continue your saved game (only 1 saved game at a time).

I’ve seen that flashing come up.. what’s happening is you’re seeing the BACK of the infield part of the stadium.. it’s on my list to fix!

    Thanks

  • Scott C

Just purchased EWB yesterday, and want to thank you for all of your hard work in bringing it to the iPhone platform. Like many here, I was a big fan back in the Amiga days, and the potential for the growth of this new version is really exciting.

At the core, the gameplay seems to be top-notch. Most of the “buggy” things I’ve noticed so far are graphical and/or very minor, and most seem to have already been addressed here (I, too, have encountered the “mid-outfield wall,” though at the Polo Grounds; the flashing infield; the “locked” bullpen; the big-city mountain ranges, etc.).

One bigger problem, though, is that I’ve had stability issues 3 of the 4 times I’ve played – the game will crash at different points (screen freezes for a sec, goes black, and then exits out to the main iPhone menu). Didn’t appear to be one particular operation that caused it, or even one type of game (two were in Manager Only mode, one was in Play & Manage) or display (one crash was in Full Director Camera, while two were in Single Camera).

Glad to get in on it from the start, and I’m really looking forward to the new developments you’ve mentioned as it goes forward. Thanks!

    • BK001

I have had the same issue in that the game crashed in three of the games I have played. In each game I was NL 61-75 and the home team, but different stadiums. It crashed in the bottom of the first inning each time.

  • BK001

    Eddie,
Appreciate the efforts already put into this great app and looking forward to the updates to make it an even better. One issue that hasn’t been mentioned previously, is that when playing round robin in the old time league, AL 00-30 ends up playing itself. Then when the league is over it had a record of 91-73 when all other teams played about 20 games.

Will upcoming updates allow for you to play as the manager of one team for a season and allow for a review of stats during the season? How about a play-off mode? Any chance of a draft mode that would allow you to draft your own team of available players?

Also, I have not played the game before purchasing this app would like further information on the instructions for the game.

Thanks again for a great baseball game.

  • WhoDat

    Eddie,

I just purchased the game through iTunes on my computer. However, when I tried to sync it to my iPod Touch (first version, updated to 2.2), I was told that it is not compatible. Then I tried to download it from the Touch itself and was given an error message that it is only for the iPhone. I have never had this problem with any other app, and hoping that it will be fixed soon.

Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.

  • alanr

Was playing a round-robin season where the computer generates results and scores, and then I received a message in the middle that said ‘Say hey – teams not found’.

  • jaywigley

    Eddie,
Don’t know if you remember me, but I helped you get some of those great “According to Earl” seasons ported over to the IGI baseball engine years back. I’m a big fan of your work and look forward to seeing more seasons available (1980, please!) and I’d love to know that you’re doing some play testing of season stats on those retro years.
Best of luck and I think the price should drop to $4.99,
    Jay Wigley

  • BJWanlund

    Eddie–

This is such a cool idea! I was wondering, is the iPhone port now your full-time gig as far as Earl Weaver Baseball derivatives/ports are concerned, or will you go back to IGI baseball as well and update it and/or the site?

    Thanks!

    Sincerely,

    BJ Wanlund

    • Eddie D.

If there’s enough interest, I’d like to update IGI baseball with many of the fixes/adjustments made for EWB, then, move them both forward… but it all depends on the interest level.

      • BJWanlund

I am MORE than interested in IGI Baseball getting updated!! I used to play EWB (the original) constantly, and to have a cool new version of the game on my Mac? Absolute heaven!

Heck, if you need a beta tester, I’m certainly willing to help!

        BJ

      • danielgue

Hi Eddie, amazing to see you here working on this project.

I am a long time admirer of EWB, like others. Unfortunately without IPhone (I have an HTC Diamond with Win Mobile 6.1)

You can add me to that list of people, who are interested in IgiBall or a Windows Mobile version.

I once made a little QBASIC program called seasontool to create Season disks automatically. I read, you are working on stats, but if you need already drafted players with some kind of auto-ratings, maybe I can help you.

Of course I would do beta testing as well.

Congrats to that fine idea of bringing EWB to iPhone and also to this website. It looks great.

        Regards,

        Daniel Guenther

        • Eddie D.

In the next phase of development, we’re going to build the ability to for users to post leagues for download… what format do you create your season disks? For Earl Weaver (1.5 or 2), IGI Ball? LMK and we can work together to get them to be compatible with both EWB (iPhone) and IGI Ball (Windows).

          • danielgue

            Hi Eddie. Thanks for replying.

What I think I can offer are complete season disks with some kind of autoratings according to batting and pitching stats. I was not able to produce defensive ratings like ARM and RANGE for players, so they all got a default rating in that category (of course this is not fine because those ratings are usually great to have because they can make games play out differently: Is that line drive up the middle caught by the RANGE 8 shortstop or not? Can this 9-cannon arm nail down the runner at third?)

So these are not there, as well as there are no split stats and only 25-man rosters because my old stattool only produces EWB 1.5 format.

But on the positive side, I’ve tested it today – it works on my Windows XP (SP 2) – and obviously it can be used to quickly create some historic season files from 1901 to 2005 and 2008.

I already have made 2006 to 2008 in EWB 1.5 format with that tool. So you can tell me what to do with them to make them available in the future, if needed.

The tool itself is like I said programmed in QBASIC (ugh!) and was my first ever big self-programmed tool with that much source code. I even got some positive feedback from probably two or three EWB fans (if i remember correctly) who managed to use it after I put it on a website.

Anybody should be very curagous to use it. You need windows and you have to know how to handle exe-files in folders, understand my english and also be able to use a DOS shell etc… not that easy!

I have it here on this website:

            http://www.jtc-ufo.com/ewb

            Thanks again,

            Daniel Guenther

  • Hi Eddie… I honestly can’t believe I’m seeing EWB get revived. Heck, I just made reference to it the other day in a blog post about the passing of Johnny Blanchard. I wasn’t a TV kid. I wasn’t an NES kid. I was an EWB kid. If it was nice out, I played baseball. If it was rainy, I played Earl Weaver Baseball.

I constantly checked the App Store with a “baseball” search, but mostly just saw 100 different takes on presenting news feeds or live box scores (zzzzzz). I wanted a sim.

THE sim is here. I’ve never given up eight bucks so quickly in my life.

That said, I realize I’m investing in what this project can become. It’s amazing what is working already. But my first two attempts at managing a game were cut short by crashes in the 6th and 7th innings, respectively (I was losing both games, so we’re cool). FWIW, both crashes seemed to happen after I tried to make a lineup change. The bottom nav bar would just disappear. I could click on the strategy menu items (bunt, etc.), but couldn’t return to the game. Had to quit.

The feature that I want like no other is the ability to create and edit players. When I was a kid, I used to make teams of my friends and play against the all time greats. I would LOVE to do that again. 🙂

Thanks again. This has been awesome playing with EWB again!

    • Eddie D.

Thanks for your note…it’s great to hear stories about how people played the game years ago!

Let me know which version you’re playing with… many of the lineup-crashing bugs should have been fixed in version 1.0.2.. if not, send me an email (I’m installing an emailer today) with as much specific detail you can and I’ll track ’em down).

As for creating/editing players.. here’s the plan for now… the data files are compatible with I GOT IT BASEBALL (or igiBall) that’s available for windows (at http://www.bangbangplay.com). In a near-term release, we’ll be making the ability to download stats from THIS website and to POST stats to this website for downloading into your iPhone. So, in the short term, igiBall will be the league creation and editing tool.. then, if there’s enough interest, we’ll make a web-based league management system.

      • Thanks Eddie. It was 1.0.2. I’ll see if I can consistently reproduce the issue.

Looking forward to those editable stats. Great news!

        • Tried a game again, and got the crash. Had 1st & 2nd, nobody out. So, I checked my lineup to see what Minoso’s bunt rating was. It’s a 7. Yay! I put the bunt on, hit Play Ball and nothing happened. Then the bottom bar disappeared and was replaced with the infield dirt (while the “call play” screen remained open). I was losing this game, too. You keep saving me. 🙂

      • As far as reproducing bugs… I just played my first game without opening a stat page. It was also my first game that didn’t end in a crash. So, now I know to avoid those stat screens until 1.0.3.

Like old times again now, thanks so much for this.

Oh, and my AL 30-45 beat NL 30-45 5-3 with Lefty Grove getting the 5-out save!

  • statnut

Just a quick thing. Had a game ending bug happen in a game. Mark Carreon got hurt, I inserted Daryl Boston, and touched done. But the game kept telling me that Carreon was hurt, even though he was showing up as replaced in the lineup.

Overall though, the changes made help. I’m just hoping for a control one team for a season option, as that will really help my enjoyment of the game.

  • Eddie D.

Thanks.. this is similar to the problem of changing pitchers that is in the bug list.. I’ve updated the list to include injured players. Got the team control on the list!

  • statnut

Sweet. Team control is my big thing right now, as it would make it easier for season play.

My one other problem lies in the AI strategy. While playing a game, the pitcher came up with men on 1st and 2nd with 0 outs, and didnt bunt. They came up again with a man on 1st and one out and swung away again. The fact that they didnt hit into a DP was just sheer luck. Is there any fix for this, as its not the first time I’ve noticed it.

  • statnut

The two teams I remember seeing it happen with are Boston and the Cubs. And I wasnt managing either squad.

  • First, I freakin’ love playing this game…

Got a rather arcane bug for ya. Bet ya haven’t run into this one… 🙂

    1. I had runners on first and third.
    2. I set “Steal 2nd”
    3. A balk was committed. Runner on third scores and runner on 2nd moves to second.
    4. However, “Steal 2nd” is still set. On full pitch mode, it keeps announcing the runner is trying to steal and goes one pitch at a time. There were even a couple pitchouts!

Didn’t cause a crash or anything and was fine after that hitter, but just wanted to report it. Thanks!

  • drjohnnyfeverhc

What does the “player degradation” setting do?

    • Eddie D.

Player degradation reduces a player’s abilities once they’ve played 110% of the games they have played in their historical stats. For example if player Smith played 100 games in the real season, then, once he’s played 110 games in a simulated season, he starts to get worse and worse (of course, if he’s a .350 batter, worse isn’t so bad for a while!).

      Hope this helps.

      – Eddie

  • rogeraggie

I just got the game. It loads the leagues that came with the game okay. When I go to change leagues and then browse leagues, I can’t seem to connect to the server – I either get a message saying can’t connect to server try again, or it starts to connect and them kicks me back to the download league page.

    Roger

    • Eddie D.

roger, please send me some additional information using the REPORT A BUG link at the top of my blog… need to know what type of device you have and if you’re connecting via your phone connection or via wi-fi connection… my guess is that a wi-fi connection won’t time out.

It’s also possible that everyone’s trying to download the file information all at the same time.. I’ll look into the traffic.

  • eaze22

I cannot access any leagues other than the 1990, 1991, and alltime…I have a iPhone 3G with the latest software upgrade. Could you please help? Thanks.

  • mw500

Just downloaded the app last night-and I am very excited that this game is back, always enjoyed the pc game and have yet to find a baseball sim as fun. With this app I can now stop searching.

Will there be updates to the app that allow you to create 162 game schedules for leagues? Also, a setting to allow you to manage (1) team through an entire season. How about creating manager profiles and drafting teams?

    • Eddie D.

I am working on another release, though it’s pretty complicated… in the current version, you can play a round robin season and, the team you select as your home team is the team you can manage throughout that season. I did that partly in anticipation of the same feature for league play… I’ll include a modified version of the scheduler that allows you to choose (probably) number of games per season, inter-league play rules and control of “your” team rules.

As for league play options, I’m still scouting around for a solution to that for multiple users.

      Enjoy!

  • db4ip

You really should lower the price of EWB Baseball for the iPhone to 99 cents or at most $1.99. That price point greatly appeals to potential buyers on that platform. And you could potentially get many more baseball fans to buy and try out the product which you desperately need. We diehard fans who remember EWB from the 80s will but it at $8.00. But the new fans knowing nothing about EWB will balk at that price. Please introduce EWB to a new generations of fans by lowering the price ASAP. You will probably make more money, grow the fan base, get more feedback, and hopefully the new fans will give EWB high ratings to make it a a much higher rating baseball game in the iPhone App store as it deserves to be.

  • db4ip

You should lower the price to 99 cents just so you can get more people using EWB. Later you could optionally allow fans to add special features with the new in-app purchasing feature now available to iPhone developers.

    • Eddie D.

It’s a thought.. I’m not quite ready for that though. Even at the high price, the game is receiving a lot of criticism for not being competitive as an action or visual-video-game style game… I was hoping to keep the user-base focused on the simulation aspects by keeping the price up and that seems to have more or less worked… I may offer a pre-season discount, but I’m still just considering that.

  • jpsherfy

As many say, I was pleasantly surprised to see my favorite baseball game for the iphone. I really had no games on my phone until I bought this. I just went on a road trip and enjoyed playing the game when I had a bit of time. Anyway, playing the game has brought back a few memories of things I wish could be “fixed.” Maybe the best potential fix would be for those of us who play one pitch mode. Is there any way you can change the game to allow the manager to pick a strategy once the pitch count is known? I remember thinking this was a problem way back when. It would be nice to know the pitch count before I tell my guy on first to steal second. Other than that I do remember a few issues with base runners not moving up from second to third or third to home on balls hit to the first base side. And too many times when throws were made home and allowed a single to become a double. But all in all a great game despite these little annoyances.

    • How right you are! How good must a game engine be if all you can do is complain about such things! They obviously are only “little annoyances” but from my point of view, well observed ones. I noticed too that runners don’t move up. Also, what you did not mention is, that infielders too often focus on the lead runner and create a fielders choice where none should have been, as well. Fielders in general throw a bit too much at runners who are already safe and costing thereby an advancement of the runners, as you said in case of a single, but also many times in the infield. That always annoyed me! (Screaming at the screen: NOO, dont try to get the runner at second, go to first!!! Oh my god!).

Regarding the one pitch modus, your feature request could be tricky. As soon as you have the count, you already KNOW that something is gonna happen and you may decide your strategy on that fact alone, which not would be right. Well, it could be a foul ball, but in general, AFAIK, the count is calculated and the ball is put into play (or the k or bb happens). So when you have a 2-1 count and you already know the ball is hit in the field, would you still try to steal secont, or try that bunt? I don’t know, probably it would be best to go to full count, but that sometimes makes it a long game. Anyhow, like I said, good observations!

    • Eddie D.

Thanks for these notes… I’ll ponder the one-pitch mode option to allow you to call a play.. it’s a valid point, but only certain plays may be allowed at that moment.. but, for example, if the count goes to 3-0 with a poor hitter, might make sense to tell him not to swing!

As for the fielder’s choices (i.e. where they choose to throw the ball) and the runner’s AI, I’m hopeful to dig into these annoyances later in the season.

  • sockpuppet999

Any chance of getting it so you can save stats for just playing games. I want to run a season but do not want to use round robin play.

  • glengoyne

Any news on updates? Can you load alternate rosters? Are there still plans to expand the commissioner capabilities..maybe utilizing a web interface? My friends and I drafted and managed all time rosters, and I’d love to be able to play those old teams.

    • Eddie D.

Starting to work on some updates now.. first one will likely be more bug fixes (I’ve eliminated most of the crashes and freezes, but there’s still a few that crop up way too often!). If you have a league file that you’d like to use and you’re willing to share it with the general playing public, let me know and I can add it to the downloadable files for now.

It’s my hope to make a more general purpose website interface… for now, the easiest way is through igiBall at http://www.bangbangplay.com.

    Hi, Eddie

Wow! What a blast from the past! It’s been keeping me plenty occupied on my commute to work. It’s also interesting to see how so many current baseball games have been influenced by EWB… Bravo! I love it! A modernized version of this game would be amazing. Here’s hoping you do it.

One thing I will say, and I remember this when I played the original EWB v2 on my PC, it seems there’s a stat glitch: doubles hitters don’t hit many doubles. In fact I remember I played an entire season with the original and hardly any of the players accumulated doubles that were commensurate with the doubles they accumulated in real life… keep an eye out for it…

Also, my other critique: I remembered the physics were actually better on v 1.0 and 1.5 then they were on 2.0, and the same is true with the app.

I really do hope you make a modernized, slicker version of EWB: modern gfx, physics, detailed ballparks, etc… but even if you don’t, it’s EWB baseball is still a boat load of fun… and it was so ahead of it’s time when it was originally released. Thanks for bringing it back…

  • agoddard

Love this game and still play it using Dosbox on the laptop. Was very interested in the iPhone version so I downloaded it – game play is good and it is easy to use but I’m missing the things I find great in EWB2 – namely being able to create my own leagues and custom schedules, selecting a Human managed team, creating, trading, waiving, signing players, etc. Any plans to add these to the iPhone version?

One additional ask for this version would be the ability to import/export stats and leagues so you can print stats or transfer a league.

Thanks Eddie – great to see you are still innovating the best baseball sim game ever!!

  • agoddard

Any updates? Will there be an iPad version coming out?

    Thanks!

  • publicfarley

Thank you. A million times thank you for bringing this to iOS. I was addicted to the Amiga 500 version back in the day and always pined for this game to be brought to a modern platform. Now I can relive the glory days.

Just one request… please, please bring this to the iPad. The iPad, with its big beautiful display, is my main gaming platform now. Would love to have this game brought to Apple’s tablet.

  • Just some fun stuff: From wikipedia’s “Earl Weaver Baseball” article, which was the predecessor to EWB Baseball for iPhone by Eddie: “EWB was a major hit, and along with John Madden Football helped pave the way for the EA Sports brand, which launched in 1992.” Now check this funny youtube clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcw_G0oK6Ns

Not sure how often anyone checks these boards anymore but I’ve spent the better part of a couple hours trying to find this game at the App store, both on my computer and my 4Gen iPod, but not found anything. Would love to pay the $7.99 to purchase it but can’t locate it.

Also, someone mentioned they play the dosbox version…how does that work? Every time I tried, I would get into ‘never ending inning’ loop, the same error you’d get on the original if you didn’t properly enter the password from the code wheel. The dosbox version I used never asked for a password, which I do have as I still hold possession of the original code wheel. Just curious.

Thanks! I look forward to playing this game again someday!
